Profile – Project Manager – Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

Qualification – B.Tech/M.Tech – Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a closely related technical field.

Experience – Min 2-5 years of progressive experience in project management within the renewable energy (solar/wind), power, or energy storage sectors, with at least 3-5 years specifically managing Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects.

Salary – Upto 10 LPA

Job Summary:
The Project Manager – BESS will be responsible for the end-to-end planning, execution, monitoring, and successful delivery of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects, whether standalone or integrated with solar/wind farms. This role requires deep technical understanding of BESS technologies, strong project management acumen, and the ability to navigate complex interfaces with grid operations, various stakeholders, and regulatory bodies to deliver projects on time, within budget, and to the highest quality and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Project Lifecycle Management:
Lead and manage all phases of BESS projects from initiation and planning to execution, monitoring, control, and closure.
Define project scope, objectives, deliverables, and resource requirements in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
Develop detailed project plans, schedules (Gantt charts, critical path), and budgets, and track performance against them.

Technical & Solution Understanding:
Possess a strong understanding of various BESS technologies (e.g., Lithium-ion, flow batteries), Power Conversion Systems (PCS), Battery Management Systems (BMS), Energy Management Systems (EMS), and SCADA integration for BESS.
Review and validate BESS system designs, single line diagrams (SLDs), layouts, and technical specifications.

Contractor & Vendor Management:
Select, negotiate, and manage EPC contractors and key equipment suppliers for BESS projects.
Oversee contractor performance, ensuring adherence to contractual obligations, quality, and safety standards.

Financial & Commercial Management:
Maintain strict control over project budgets, track expenditures, and identify opportunities for cost optimization.
Manage project cash flows, invoicing, and payment milestones with contractors and suppliers.
Identify and manage commercial risks associated with BESS project execution.

Regulatory & Grid Compliance:
Ensure all BESS project activities comply with relevant Indian Electrical Rules (IE Rules), CEA Regulations, Grid Codes (CTU/STU), environmental regulations, and safety standards.
Liaise with grid authorities (SLDC/RLDC), DISCOMs, and regulatory bodies for necessary clearances, approvals, and interconnection agreements specific to BESS.

Risk Management & Problem Solving:
Proactively identify, assess, and mitigate project risks (technical, commercial, regulatory, operational) specific to BESS deployment.
Develop contingency plans and provide timely resolution to project challenges.

Stakeholder Management & Communication:
Serve as the primary point of contact for internal stakeholders (Engineering, Procurement, Finance, Operations) and external parties (clients, grid operators, consultants).
Provide regular and accurate project status reports, dashboards, and presentations to senior management and clients.

Site Management & Quality Assurance:
Oversee all on-site construction, installation, testing, and quality control activities for the BESS.
Ensure strict adherence to quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) plans and site safety protocols.

Testing, Commissioning & Handover:
Lead and ensure successful pre-commissioning checks, testing, and commissioning of the BESS.
Facilitate the smooth handover of completed BESS projects to the Operations & Maintenance team.

SKILLS
Demonstrated expertise in managing large-scale, complex EPC projects.
Strong technical understanding of BESS components, system integration, grid connection requirements, and operational characteristics.
Proficiency in project management software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera P6) and MS Office Suite.
Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent certification is highly preferred.
